An NFC tag is a sticker thinner than a sheet of paper, with a copper antenna inside, costing between 15 and 50 cents. It has no battery and nothing to wear out: it powers itself from the phone's own signal. You write your link into it once and from then on anyone who taps a phone against the object sees your menu, your reviews page or your Instagram open up — with no camera and no scanning.
Careful, these two get mixed up a lot: this is not an «NFT». An NFT is a digital certificate of ownership recorded on a blockchain, from the crypto world, and has nothing to do with tapping a phone on an object. What you want for a business is NFC.
Because each one covers the other's weakness. NFC is slicker and faster — one gesture and done — but it needs the customer to know to tap and to have it switched on. The QR code is universal: it works on any phone, it can be photographed, it can be read from a distance and even from a screenshot someone shared. In the same object the tag hides inside and the code is printed on the face: those who know, tap; everyone else scans.
Tick the NFC box and the 3D file comes out with a round pocket 1 mm deep sized for the standard 25 mm sticker. On the keychain and the plaque it sits on the back face, right behind the code; on the table stand it goes in the back wall, which is also the orientation that prints best — no bridging, no supports. Print it, peel the sticker, drop it in the pocket and it sits flush: nothing shows from the outside.
The plastic does not block the signal: NFC goes through one or two millimetres of PLA or PETG without trouble. The only thing that kills it is metal, so avoid metal-filled filaments in that area and do not stick the object on a metal surface unless you use on-metal tags.

A QR code carries the link inside its pattern, so a new address means a new print. An NFC tag, on the other hand, is rewritten in ten seconds with a phone. If you switch digital menu or website tomorrow, reprogram the tags and the same objects keep working. One tip: point the QR at a stable, simple address of your own, and change where that address leads whenever you need to.
A 3D printed QR code is not an image: it is an object with relief. That changes the rules. A code that looks perfect on screen can come off the printer unreadable if the relief is too shallow, if the two colours are too close, or if the code carries so much information that its little squares end up smaller than the printer's nozzle. Here are the three things that genuinely matter, and the tool watches all of them for you while you design.
A phone camera does not see relief: it sees light and dark. That is why the file downloads as 3MF, the standard format for modern 3D printers, which stores colour inside the file itself. Open it in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Orca or Cura and you will see two parts — the base and the code — each with its colour, ready to assign to two filaments. The safest combination is a light base with a dark code: white with black, beige with dark brown, yellow with navy. Pick two similar shades and the tool warns you before you download, because that object will not scan even in good light.
Each little square of the code is called a module. Below 1.5 mm the nozzle rounds off the corners, modules merge into each other and the pattern stops being readable. How many modules you get depends on how much information you pack in: a short link makes a 25-module code, a long one can go past 50. So if your link is enormous, shorten it (with a link shortener or a cleaner URL) instead of growing the object until it no longer fits on the table. The tool shows you at all times how many millimetres each module measures at your chosen size.
Between 1 and 2 mm is the sweet spot, and 1.2 mm is the sweetest: enough to feel it and to get a clean colour change, without casting shadows that confuse the camera in side lighting. Under 1 mm the filament change may not cover the previous layer properly; over 2 mm the print takes longer and gains little.
It prints just the same. Open the 3MF, check the height where the relief starts (whatever you chose: 1.2 mm above the base by default) and program a filament change at that layer in your slicer. The machine pauses on its own, you swap the spool and it carries on in the second colour. It is the classic trick and it works on any printer.
STL still exists for compatibility, but it stores no colour: it is geometry only. That is why we offer it as a secondary option, as a ZIP with two files, one per part, so you can import both and assign a filament to each by hand. If your printer and your slicer are from this decade, use the 3MF.
3MF is the standard format for modern 3D printers and it stores colours inside the file itself. Open it in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Orca or Cura and the base and the code already appear as two separate parts in two colours. STL stores no colour, which is why we offer it only as a secondary option for older printers.
Yes, as long as there is real contrast between base and relief and each module is at least 1.5 mm. The tool works both out live and warns you when your design will not scan.
For the best result, yes. With a single-colour printer you can print the base, program a filament change at the layer where the relief starts and carry on in the second colour. Every slicer supports it.
No. The table stand is a wedge tilted about 38° that prints on its base with the code face up. The keychain and the plaque are flat. None of them needs supports or a raft.
Yes. Upload your logo or pick an emoji. In the PNG and SVG it comes out in full colour; in the 3D file it becomes a single-colour silhouette automatically, because the relief prints in one colour. When a centre image is present we raise the code's error-correction level so it stays readable.

Matte PLA is the best pick: it does not shine, and shine is the enemy of scanning. Avoid glitter or silk filaments on the code face; keep those for the base if you want something fancy.

Round 25 mm NTAG213 stickers are the standard: between €0.15 and €0.50 each in packs of 50 or 100. NTAG213 is plenty for a link. Avoid metal-backed tags, or sticking them onto metal, unless they say «on metal».
On Android + Chrome you can write it right here with the tool's button. From iPhone or a computer, use a free app such as NFC Tools: «Write» → «URL» → paste your link → tap the sticker. Tags can be rewritten as often as you like, so if you change menu or website nothing has to be reprinted.
Yes. Every iPhone from the XR onwards reads NFC tags with nothing installed: just bring the top of the phone close. The only thing an iPhone cannot do is write a tag from the browser; that needs the free app.
